Lapland hometown hoodlum named Marzipan Räikkönen is killed near his home.

But the who, why, and how of the murder no one knows, not even the victim himself. His death launches a series of events recounted in the first person by thirty-five different people touched by Marzipan’s murder. The witty story line cleverly connects the dots among the personalities, including the ambulance drivers, detectives, family members, neighbors, two-bit criminals, and even the minister officiating at the funeral, to finally reveal the killer. This fast moving crime novel, full of wry Finnish humor, deepens into a multilayered panorama about society, its people, and ultimately justice.

Excerpt from the novel:
"You done made a mess o' things again," she said, giving me a stern look. I looked away, at the birches outside and then at the Dimwit, who pulled his tongue out of his mouth with his fingers to see if his candy was gone. I gave him another piece.
"Best if you know nothin' if someone asks," I said.
"Say what?" Ma asked, rinsing the cups under the faucet. She put them right side up in the cupboard. I pointed out the wouldn't drain that way.
"Now go. Looks like a car's comin'," she said. I was frantically putting on my second boot when she started to laugh. I threw the boot at her and she caught it, quite nimbly for a sixty-some-year old woman, and threw it out the window. It was great shot - right through the small ventilation window and into the yard, not even grazing the frame. In a rage, I hobbled out to get my boot, slipping on the thin coat of ice that covered the stone steps. My side hurt like hell, and I wondered if I'd broken something. I slid my foot in the boot and bounded back up the wobbly steps of the house.
Ma's gonna get it, I thought to myself, but just then I heard a car bumping through the potholes up our long, winding driveway. I couldn't remember where I put my leather coat, so I grabbed the nearest jacket from the hook in the entryway and scrambled down the trail. Just for the hell of it, I stopped by the shed door, and let out a scream.
Then I ran into the woods and waited. I glanced at my bare wrist, wondering what time it was. I counted the seconds for ten minutes, then got back on the trail and headed towards town. Just before the pond I sat down on a rock. That's where I was killed; I'm just not sure how.

Originally published in Finland, the critically-acclaimed novel quickly became a best seller and was made into a popular movie.
