The mutilated body of a man wearing only a bridal veil is discovered in a backyard swing; a woman lay dead inside the house. When the murders go unsolved, private eye Jussi Vares is hired to look into this “Swinging Bride” case.
The gig takes Vares, a wisecracking, tough-on-the-outside private investigator and his colorful group of friends deep inside the underworld run by an intimidating and elusive “Sheriff,” where Vares meets a mysterious woman on a motorcycle.
An excerpt of the novel:
Pränni had barely left the station parking lot when his cell phone rang again. It was Vahteristo again, sounding even more strained than earlier. He was searching for words, struggling to spit them out.
"It's Pränni, I'm listening."
"I had to call again, to clarify... It's pretty bad... Peltonen here recognized the address and I'm afraid it is worse than we thought..."
"What do you mean 'worse'?" Pränni snipped.
"We have a strong suspicion... that... though we haven't lifted the victims head and taken a look at his face - haven't touched anything - we think this is the residence of a public servant."
"Who do you mean? The county assessor? the tax man? The chimney sweep?" Pränni barked.
"i'm talking about a colleague of ours..."
Pränni later remembered the first strange churn of his gut.
"Who?"
"Salomaa from Patrol."
"Salomaa... hang on..." It took Pranni a second - the name was familiar, but he couldn't put a face to it. Then it dawned on him.
"Uh, hold on... The Salomaa? The big dark-haired guy who went to Afganistan?"
"The one and the same."
"So this is Salomaa's address?" Pränni confirmed. "Okay, but are you positive?"
"It's hard to say for sure. We know it's a male and the hair color and the body size match... but we didn't touch him. We didn't lift his head, didn't see his face..."
"You did the right thing. Secure the area... but don't go near him. I'll be there soon... I have to go."
The Sheriff, Finland’s 2012 Crime Novel of the Year, is filled with humor, suspense, insights into Finnish culture, and a nod to America’s Wild West.
